2B's Week - at- a - Glance

Mrs. Humphries

August 25-September 5, 2008
(Two Weeks)

Religion:

Unit 1: Our Church Celebrates Sacraments-Chapters 1: We Belong to the Catholic Church. We will be studying pages 12-21 for the first two weeks of school. We will learn the following vocabulary words: Christians, community, Catholic Church, faith (p.13), Catholics, parish, pastor, parish church, baptismal font, altar, ambo, crucifix (p.17), vestments, paten, hosts, lectionary, chalice (p.19). I know this is a lot of words! No other chapter has more than five words. The words in Chapter 1 help the children understand much of what is discussed throughout the book. We will be making a study guide, in our Religion copybook, to help master these terms.

Throughout second grade the children will be memorizing several prayers. These prayers are on pages 2 - 6 of the Religion textbook.

Math:

Chapter 1: Using Addition Strategies: Pages 1-30 in large Math book. There is usually Math Homework, Monday through Thursday, in their Practice Math book.

SKIP COUNTING: All year the students will be learning to skip count or reviewing what they've learned. Skip counting helps when doing addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division fast facts. Students will learn to think and visualize in groups. They will learn to use and recognize valuable number patterns. We will begin doing this the week of September 29-October 3. We'll begin by learning to skip count by 2s.

S. Studies & Science

Mrs. Rosti and I will begin these classes in the week of September 8-12, 2008. Mrs. Rosti will be teaching the Science to 2A and 2B and I will be teaching the Social Studies to 2A and 2B.

Phonics

We will begin the year with a review of Initial and Final Consonant Sounds and Blends. The children have a phonics workbook: Phonics and Phonemic Awareness. The book contains work pages related to what we're working on in Language Arts for the week. We will sometimes have a page of phonics homework.

Grammar

We have new Grammar books this year. The title is: Language Arts. It is by Macmillan/McGraw-Hill. There is also a practice book that goes along with the text. In Unit 1 we will be studying the four types of sentences: Statement, Questions, Commands and Exclamations-pages 1-20.

NOTES:

I will be sending home any papers that I gave out at Back-to-School Night (August 18th-7pm) to any parents that were unable to attend.

All softbound textbooks should be covered with clear contact paper by the end of September.

I am printing the Week-at-a-Glance for this two week period only. For future weeks please go to the SJS website: www.sjsmch.org and bring up 2B. Make sure you print the PRINT FRIENDLY page. The 'printer friendly' icon is located at the bottom of each week's Glance. If you don't have access to The SJS Web page Please let me know and I'll run a copy for your child each week.

I'm looking forward to a great year with my new 2B family. Each of us fit together to form the new community!! This is our theme for the year.
