2A's Week at a Glance
September 6-10, 2010
We had a great first week!
RELIGION: This week, we will be working in Chapter 1 - God is the Giver of Gifts. God has given us the gifts of creation, and we ourselves are gifts, as well. We will begin to do our daily Prayer Circle, which is a time for personal intentions.
MATH: Our books are here!! We will introduce the chapter's vocabulary: tens, ones, estimate, and pattern. Students will write the numbers to 100, use place value charts, work with tens and ones, and have another Five Minute Frenzy on Friday. Also, we will determine value depending on the placement of the digit. For example: the number 65 - the 6 in the tens place has a value of 60 , and the 5 in the ones place has a value of 5.
SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES: We will have an introduction to each class this week. The children will hear about some of the topics they will learn this year in both Science and Social Studies.
Reading: This week's story is Ann's First Day. Skills include using a glossary, locating title pages and the table of contents, making predictions, and working with short vowel words.
The reading selection test for this story, as well as the Spelling test will be given on Friday, Sept. 10th.
Students brought home the September Reading Log on Thursday. Second grade requires 10-15 minutes of reading nightly. Students will color in the books depending on the genre of story the read. Directions are on the back of the log. Although I like to see the logs each Monday to see how students are progressing, it is not truly necessary to send logs back until the end of the month. The logs will also work in conjunction with the Book It! Program. At the end of each month, students who complete and return the log will receive a Pizza Hut coupon for a free personal size pizza.
Vocabulary: hurry shy lucky crawls carrots homework
Spelling: still best bat mom just desk clock hut fit plant
The Spelling words can now be found on SpellingCity.com - just go to the site, click 'Find a list' click 'by teacher', type in my name Leah Rosti, click my name, and you should see the words for each story - Ann's First Day. Enjoy the games and features!
ILA: Students will write in their journals daily. Be sure to ask about the topics!
Grammar: Students will work with complete and incomplete sentences, statements, questions, and punctuation.
Handwriting: For the month of September, students will be working with manuscript print. They will be strengthening their printing skills, and focus on proper posture and grip. In second grade, students typically begin to learn cursive letters in November.

NOTES : St. Joseph has been experiencing some email trouble lately. If you have sent me a message through email, I have responded to each of you. Unfortunately, some messages are bouncing back several days later. I apologize for this inconvenience. Please note, I can receive, but I will start to respond by pen and paper until this bug has been worked out.
Scholastic Book orders are due this week.
Specials begin this week.
The lunch program is working very smoothly! Thank you for discussing the menu options with your children - they all come in knowing what they want! They are now responsible for posting their choices on our lunch board, and this is going very well, too.
Thank you to all who have taken a "Helping Hand" and donated various items to the room!
Please return all paperwork and forms as soon as possible. The emergency contact forms are most important.
Please check your child's folder nightly for important notes and information.
Please contact me whenever you have a question or concern about your child or the classes. I check email every morning, after school, and evening. Please note that if you send an email during the school day, I will probably not be able to see it until the end of the day. If there is a time sensitive matter, like change of transportation or request for books to be sent home, please contact the office. They will get the message to me. Thanks!
