* I sent home all of the workbooks this weekend. Please cover each one with clear contact paper to preserve the covers. Thank you.

* If your child did not receive the school supplies box, he/she owes $11.00 for the copybooks and Assignment Book which must be purchased from school. Please make checks payable to St. Joseph School and send the check in asap. Thank you.

* We will be starting First in Math this week. The children will receive their passwords on Thursday. Starting next week, your child will need to work on the First in Math website for 20 minutes each week. An index card will be taped inside the front cover of the Assignment Book for you to keep track of the date and the minutes each week.

* I am sending home the September reading calendar on Tuesday. I will normally e-mail the calendars, but I don't have everyone's e-mail address in the computer yet. The goal for September is to read 240 minutes. All calendars will be due by Friday, October 1st.

* A book order will be coming home on Tuesday also. If you would like to order books, please send in the completed order form, along with a check made payable to 'Scholastic Book Clubs', by Wednesday, 9/15.

* I will begin assigning homework on Tuesday. Please remember to initial your child's Assignment Book each night and to make sure the homework is completed.

* Our first kind of writing in third grade will be personal narrative. Please have your child bring in a photograph by next Friday, 9/10. The photo can be from a vacation, a holiday, a special celebration, family members, pets, or just an every day photo. Your child does not have to be in the photo, but he/she must be able to tell a story about the picture. Who is in the photo? What was happening? When and/or where was it taken? etc. Please do not have your child bring in a school picture. It will be hard to write a personal narrative from just a portrait. These pictures will not be returned, as they will be attached to our published stories. Thank you for your help.

* Our first spelling test will be on Friday, 9/10. For right now, the vocabulary words are optional on the test. If your child has no difficulty spelling the regular words, please encourage him/her to work on the vocabulary words. These are considered challenge words for the time being and are worth bonus points. Students do not lose any points if they try the vocabulary words and do not spell them correctly. So I encourage everyone to at least try, because there is nothing to lose.

* Sometime during the next two weeks, please have your child bring in a towel to use during D.E.A.R. time. This can be an old beach or bath towel, but it will be kept in school. I will periodically send the D.E.A.R. towels home to be washed. (D.E.A.R. = Drop Everything And Read)
